The 2024 season is about to start and team rosters are as good as complete, a good moment to analyse the teams. What teams can we expect to go for GCs this season? To find out, we made an analysis of the riders per team and the number of points they scored in the previous 12 months in WorldTour general classifications, see table 1.

We find UAE Team Emirates is the team who has in total the most broad GC riders on board, followed by Team Visma | Lease a Bike. Also we indicated the riders who scored over 500 points in 2024. We see that no rider from the 2024 INEOS squad has scored over 500 GC points in the WorldTour last season. Though still a top-5 GC team, they certainly miss out on a strong team captain. When comparing UAE with INEOS, the difference in GC strength becomes even more clear.

The top GC teams in 2024 are UAE and Visma | Lease a Bike, followed by BORA. In chart 3 we plotted the number of points scored for a selection of teams in the past 10 years. From this, we see that only last year UAE overtook Team INEOS as the leading GC squad, now counting all GCs. Besides the corona season of 2020, Team INEOS took a steady point total around the 6000 points each year. It will be a challenge to live up to that level in 2024. Furthermore we included Team Movistar, for the past four years they are far behind their level of 2015-2019.

Finally a comparison between Visma | Lease a Bike and BORA - hansgrohe. We saw Primož Roglič move to Bora and Uijtdebroeks go the other way. Both teams have one undisputed team captain for GCs. It could very well depend on how good the rest of the team performs when fighting for final GC victories.
