Sainbayar first pro cyclist from Mongolia!
31 October 2023, by Mark van der Linden
Today, the Spanish team Burgos - BH introduced Jambaljamts Sainbayar as their nineteenth rider for the upcoming cycling season. This makes the fast rider, who competed for the Terengganu Polygon Cycling Team this season, the very first professional cyclist from Mongolia!
At PCS, we wondered: which countries recently added their first rider to the global professional cyclists' ranks? Here's a list:
(*Note: only new professionals since 1996 included.)
Fascinating list! Mongolia becomes the 88th country in history to have a rider represented in the professional cycling peloton. (Note: it should be noted that countries that no longer exist, such as the Soviet Union, East and West Germany, Serbia and Montenegro, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia, are not included in this list.)
Other countries that recently joined this group include Puerto Rico, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. The latter two countries witnessed the debuts of Yousif Mirza and Ahmed Madan in 2017 and 2021, respectively, for teams sponsored by their own homelands. Another interesting insight: with the acquisition of a Pro Continental license, riders from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea made their professional peloton debuts in 2012 and 2013.
Let's see if there's a globalisation trend in the pro peloton. How many different countries had at least one rider in the pro peloton (World Tour and ProTeam (or equivalent)) in the past years?
