A high profile score is a good measure of how hard a race is. Another important feature of a parcours is the short climbs index. Some riders can handle a lot of vertical meters and a high profile score, as long as the climbs are not too long. The short climbs index is a measure that gives an indication if there are a lot of short climbs on the route. It is computed as follows.
Short Climbs Index (SCI) = Vertical meters / (Highest altitude - Lowest altitude)
For example, the Amstel Gold Race 2024 has 3290 vertical meters. The highest point is the Vaalserberg at 326 meter, the lowest point is 42 meter above sea level. That makes the SCI 3290 / (326 - 42) = 11.6.
