Start

Key events can be any memorable event, for example an impressive victory but also a major crash, bold solo or anything that makes for sporting memories.
During the 1985 Ronde van Vlaanderen, 23-year-old Eric Vanderaerden suffers a broken wheel before the Koppenberg, but manages to return to the back of the peloton by the start of the climb. Slaloming around others who had to set foot on the infamous climb, Vanderaerden crests the top in fifteenth place and sets out an improbable pursuit of the leaders, catching them by the Eikenberg, and finally breaking away on the Muur van Geraardsbergen and winning the race. The race was affected by abysmal weather, when a storm accompanied by wind and torrestrial rainfall, broke in the second half of the race. Only 24 of 173 participants finished.
