Standing on the virtual podium after two weeks of racing in the 2001 Giro d'Italia, Wladimir Belli was thrown out of the race after punching a spectator on the climb of Santa Barbara during stage 14. The victim, later revealed to be rival Gilberto Simoni's 18-year-old nephew, pardoned Belli, but the race jury was unanimous in their decision to disqualify the rider of Fassa Bortolo.
