Key events can be any memorable event, for example an impressive victory but also a major crash, bold solo or anything that makes for sporting memories.
During stage 3 of the 2011 Giro d'Italia, Leopard Trek rider Wouter Weylandt crashed heavily in the descent of the Passo del Bocco and suffered catastrophic injury. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead on the spot.
As homage to the young Belgian, next day's stage was preceded by a minute's silence, and ridden as a procession in his memory. His BIB number 108 has been retired from the race, and a memorial was placed at the crash site.
