In one of the most memorable editions of Strade Bianche in recent history, an unexpected incident occurred as one of the riders encountered an unusual mishap. Amidst the challenging ascent of Via Santa Caterina during the 2018 race, Wout van Aert battled debilitating leg cramps in the final stretch. The harsh weather further intensified the already demanding race conditions. Just before reaching the summit of Via Santa Caterina in Siena, van Aert succumbed to cramps and toppled off his bike, grappling to regain composure and resume the journey towards the finish line to finish the race in 3rd place.
