Origin story
The race was first held in 1945 as the Omloop van Vlaanderen, established by the newspaper Het Volk as a counterweight to the Tour of Flanders, organised by rival publisher Het Nieuwsblad. From 1947, it became widely known as Omloop Het Volk. After Het Volk was taken over by Het Nieuwsblad in 2008, the race was subsequently renamed Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
