Origin story

The event was founded in 1999 with backing from South Australian Premier John Olsen, aiming to bolster the state’s sporting schedule following the relocation of the Australian (Formula One) Grand Prix from Adelaide to Melbourne. It quickly gained popularity, becoming the customary start to the season and, in 2008, the first WorldTour race held outside Europe.
