A group of favorites reached the foot of the Keutenberg for the second ascent. Eddy Merckx attacked, with only Freddy Maertens able to follow. Ten kilometers from the finish, Merckx launched another attack, dropping Maertens. He then rode solo for the final 10 km to claim victory in the Amstel Gold Race.
