With 80 km to go, a trio of riders broke away. On the second ascent of the Keutenberg, Gerrie Knetemann accelerated from the leading trio and extended his lead. He rode solo to the finish. Knetemann claimed his first professional victory and became the youngest winner of the Amstel Gold Race.
