The finale of the Amstel Gold Race began with a strong 16-rider group. Hennie Kuiper and Joop Zoetemelk broke clear in an attack. On the second ascent of the Keutenberg, Eddy Merckx joined the attacking duo. With 20 km to go, Merckx launched a decisive move, riding solo to victory over three minutes ahead of second place.
